BESPOKE EQUINE PHOTOSHOOT

WHAT TO EXPECT

PRE-SHOOT PREPARATION

Let's organise your photo-shoot
1. Consultation

A good conversation. The initial consultation is the first step in the process to creating a truly meaningful experience and imagery that is exactly what you desire. This initial consultation will be in person where possible or over video-call, phone if not.

2. Photo-shoot brief construction:

A brief is written capturing your requirements and sent back for confirmation. In this brief, the full details of the shoot will be outlined.

3. You Confirm Brief

We’ll have a follow-up conversation. It’s always best to talk over the brief and just ensure all information is as expected and the brief really captures your desires for your photo-shoot.

4. Location scouting

For me as the photographer, having a good understanding of the setting is key to generating stunning imagery for you. If you have a specific place or setting in mind that’s great! I’ll get stuck in and find out as much as I can about this spot as I can pre-shoot. If I cant scout the area beforehand, I will be turning up early on the day to do so.

ON THE DAY

Let'S shoot!
1. Meet in person

The brief-writing process is a great way to get to know each other. When we meet, we’ll already have a good understanding of each other so we can get stuck straight into the day. Discussing the locations is a great place to start.

2. Confirm the plan

Clarifying the plan for the shoot on the day is key. A discussion on the location and settings is the best way to set targets for the kind of imagery you want to capture and where/how to do it. It’s highly likely your horse however has plans also. If these plans differ on the day, feel confident I will be able to think quickly, adapt, and work to get the best out of the situation. Fear not, your horse’s plans can produce wonderful surprises.

3. 5-min Posing Session

We can all feel a little shy in front of the camera at times, and it’s important that we have you feeling relaxed in order to get the best out of the day. A quick posing session is, of course, optional but it can be a great way to shake of any nerves.

.

4. Shooting

Most importantly, let’s make sure you are enjoying yourself during the shoot. It really shines through in the imagery. I’ll be working hard to make this happen and put you at ease. I will also be needing to swap lenses throughout the shoot, find the best angles, and study the light so there might be a bit of repetition but the end results will be worth it.

5. Champagne or Prosecco?

That is a question for after the shoot. Let’s take the time to reflect on the shoot over a drink of your choice and I will show you some sample prints, types of paper, and framing options for you to consider regarding the presentation of your imagery.

AFTER THE PHOTOSHOOT

Time to get really excited
1. Proof Image Delivery

The first step in the post-production process is the delivery of your proof-images. I will provide you with 20-40 images via your own private PROOFING GALLERY on my website. (‘proof-images’ are photos that have had just enough post-processing applied so you can see their potential)

2. Image selection - Choose your favorites

In the proofing gallery, you select your favorite images. The ones you then choose will get the full post-production process. This is where the magic happens and I really bring them to life.

4. Digital Image Delivery

Once the final post-production magic on your images is complete. Your imagery in digital form will be available for you to download from my website.

5. Print + Framing Consultation

Once you have seen your final images in digital form, lets discuss your requirements for printing and framing your magical imagery.

MY LOVE OF THE HORSE

Thanks to my family I have been around horses since I was a wee lad. I have fond memories from my childhood in New Zealand, me peddling furiously on my bike with Romany, my sister's pony, in hot pursuit. He just loved to chase my bicycle. Horses with their gifts of power and grace, character, and charm are magnificent subjects to study and photograph. I will never tire of looking at them through my lens.

Eadweard Muybridge. Animated horse. 1878

A piece of history that fascinated and inspired me in the photography of horses at age 15

When a horse trots or gallops, does it ever become fully airborne? This was the question photographer Eadweard Muybridge set out to answer in 1878. Railroad tycoon and former California governor Leland Stanford was convinced the answer was yes and commissioned Muybridge to provide proof. Muybridge developed a way to take photos with an exposure lasting a fraction of a second and, with reporters as witnesses, arranged 12 cameras along a track on Stanford’s estate.

As a horse sped by, it tripped wires connected to the cameras, which took 12 photos in rapid succession. Muybridge developed the images on-site and, in the frames, revealed that a horse is completely aloft with its hooves tucked underneath it for a brief moment during a stride. The revelation, imperceptible to the naked eye but apparent through photography, marked a new purpose for the medium. It could capture truth through technology. Muybridge’s stop-motion technique was an early form of animation that helped pave the way for the motion-picture industry, born a short decade later.
